Every so often an order lands that makes us smile at the packing bench. This week it happened twice in one day: one separator set off for a farmstead in rural Estonia, near Jõgeva, and another to a home in Budapest, Hungary.
We love these orders because they tell us something we've long suspected: some of Europe's keenest composting-toilet builders live in places the big brands barely bother with.
Why Estonia and Hungary get it
Estonia might be the most composting-toilet-friendly country in Europe. Thousands of families spend their summers at a suvila — the summer house in the countryside — where there's no mains drainage and nobody misses it. The kuivkäimla (dry toilet) is simply part of life, and a good urine separator is what turns a basic outhouse into something clean, dry and completely odour-free.
Hungary has its own version of the same story: allotment gardens and wine-country cottages, weekend places around Lake Balaton, and a growing off-grid scene — plenty of komposzt WC projects that deserve better than a bucket and hope.
The part that makes it all work
If you're building one, the principle is the same in Jõgeva as it is in Budapest or in Wales: keep the urine away from the solids and almost all the odour never happens. The solids stay dry, they compost properly, and you empty the system far less often.
